These are the sounds that our car made as we climbed a mountain (mountains are quite small in Paraguay) to see the school where we are planning to study Guaraní in September. Located 1.8 km off of the semi gravel road going from Paraguari to Escobar, half way up the mountain is a beautiful building with an even more beautiful view where the studies take place.
The directions to find the place were quite simple.
1. Drive until the road ends.
2. Go through a gate onto the field.
3. Drive through another gate and through the stream.
4. Start the climb and drive until the path ends.
5. You have arrived.
Although the suggestion was made that because we have only have a volkswagon gol to park at the bottom of the hill and walk 1/2 an hour to the top, we decided that since we drive our car like it is 4wd anyways, if a truck could make it, so could we.
So we drove through the stream, no problem, it had rocks on the bottom.
Through the deep sand, the faster the better so as to not get stuck.
Up the hill, so far so good.
Then we found out that the road was not so smooth, large rocks on the road, deep ruts. This road was designed for a truck, but since we drive our car like a 4wd we kept on going. I havn't found a road yet where a truck could make it through and we couldn't. Besides, there was no room to turn around and I wasn't going to go down that hill backwards!
But we made it, our car no worse for the wear (other than the dented muffler). It adds character. Next time, I think we'll walk.
